After a car accident, you may feel shocked and confused. However, it is important to maintain composure and get the essential information you need for your claim.

If you got into a minor car accident, you could follow these standard procedures at the scene:

  • If your car is in motion, park it in a safe spot.
  • Call the police immediately. Call for roadside assistance as needed.
  • Check on other people involved in the crash and get their contact and insurance information.
  • Approach witnesses and get their contact details. You can also take photos at the scene, including damage to your car and physical injuries.
  • Call your insurance provider and report the crash. They can also help you sort out the paperwork you must submit. You must also reach out to the insurance provider of the at-fault driver.

Additionally, never brush off a minor accident. At this point, you would not know if you sustained injuries. You might need to file a claim later.

What if I got injured?

Severe injuries need immediate attention from emergency care personnel. Get help or call 911. If you notice an injury later after the crash, go to the hospital immediately. You can file for a bodily injury claim that covers your:

  • Medical bills
  • Laboratory costs
  • Lost income
  • Pain and suffering

North Carolina laws do not enforce rules to compute for pain and suffering. Consult a lawyer if you and your insurance provider cannot agree on an amount.

Determining who is at fault

Your insurance adjuster will investigate the incident and determine who caused the crash. The North Carolina Contributory Negligence Law does not allow at-fault drivers to collect liability claims. It also applies to partially at-fault parties.
