Alcohol used to be the principal substance that would be blamed for causing a traffic accident. In recent years, non-prescription drugs are receiving their share of the blame for serious motor vehicle accidents. A three-car collision in Fayetteville is being blamed on an “unidentified substance” in the blood of the driver who appears to have been at fault.
The accident
According to police reports, a Chevy Cruz was heading north on South Reilly Road when it struck the rear-end of a Jeep. After the initial collision, the Jeep veered into the southbound lane and collided head-on with a Chrysler 300. The female passenger in the Chrysler was taken to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries after arriving at the hospital. The driver of the Chrysler was also taken to the hospital, but his physical condition has not been disclosed. The driver in the Jeep suffered only minor injuries from the collision.
Fayetteville police said that their initial investigation showed that the driver of the Cruz was speeding at the time of the collision and was under the influence of an “unknown substance.” The police said that the driver of the Cruz will face criminal charges and that the accident was still under investigation.
