While most people who do business in and around Fayetteville are at least honest enough to play by the rules, there are also too many operations which make their money by illegally tricking or taking advantage of vulnerable people.

Any North Carolinian can fall victim to a consumer scam.

However, there are some important warning signs people recognize that may help them to steer clear before it is too late.

Even if a person dies fall victim to a dishonest business, these warning signs may also prove to be valuable evidence in a subsequent lawsuit. Victims of a consumer scam should consider evaluating their legal options with an experienced consumer law attorney.

High pressure sales and big promises may be signs of a trick

A tell-tale warning sign of a scam is that the telemarketer or salesperson is using high pressure to force a sale.

Consumers should be cautious about accepting offers that are only good for a short time, and they should also be suspicious of a salesperson who refuses to take “no” for an answer. Consumers always have the right not to buy a good or service being sold on the market.

On the flip side, consumers in North Carolina should also watch out for promises that seem too good to be true. In particular, they should be able to have, and review, the details of any proposed business deal in writing.

If there seems to be some hesitation about letting a consumer review a proposed contract, the consumer should stay away.

Finally, being familiar with North Carolina’s laws, such as the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, can be very helpful to consumers.

For example, if a telemarketing firm seems to be violating this law in some respects, like calling at an inappropriate time or from an anonymous number, there is a risk that they could also be engaging in dishonest business techniques.
