How teen motorcyclists can stay safe on the road

North Carolina teens who are licensed to ride motorcycles will want to keep the following safety tips in mind. After all, motorcycles are 35 times more likely than automobiles to be involved in fatal accidents. Teen motorcyclists also file collision claims about 5.7 times more often than motorcyclists between 35 and 50 years old.

The first step is to find a motorcycle that strikes the right balance between cost efficiency, sporty appearance and safety. Sport or super-sport bikes account for most collisions, yet over 50 percent of teens choose them. Next, teens are encouraged to take motorcycle training courses. Over 90 percent of the motorcyclists who are involved in crashes had no formal training. The DMV could provide a list of approved courses.

North Carolina requires that all motorcycle riders and passengers wear helmets approved by the DoT. They should fit well without tilting and cover the forehead. Furthermore, safety gear that completely covers the arms and legs is essential; this includes heavy denim or leather jackets and pants, over-the-ankle boots, shatterproof goggles and gloves.

Speeding is behind roughly half of all single-vehicle motorcycle deaths. No matter how tempting the open road may be, teens are advised to always follow the speed limit. In addition, teens should refrain from having passengers until they are more experienced. Passengers can act as distractions.

Motorcycle accidents can be particularly serious, leading to broken bones and even traumatic brain injuries. However, if the accident was due to the negligence of the other party, such as an automobile driver, motorcyclists could be eligible for compensation. An accident claim could potentially cover medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering, among other things. To help ensure a fair settlement, a victim may want to retain a lawyer.
