North Carolina residents who are fans of the Eagles may know that founder Glenn Frey passed away in 2016 from acute ulcerative colitis. The singer’s widow has filed a lawsuit against Mount Sinai Hospital and the gastroenterologist who treated him. The lawsuit alleges that the hospital and the doctor were negligent in causing Frey’s death. It also claims that Frey was in physical and mental pain when he passed away.

Furthermore, the lawsuit says that the doctor failed to advise Frey of the potential side effects of treatment. While the suit seeks financial damages, the amount was not disclosed. According to a statement from the manager of the Eagles, the ulcerative colitis was partially caused by medications Frey was taking to control arthritis symptoms. He had been dealing with rheumatoid arthritis for about 15 years before he passed, according to the manager.

If medical negligence plays a role in causing a death, the victim’s family could file a lawsuit against the applicable health care professionals. In some cases, there may be multiple parties who are liable for damages. An attorney could review a case to determine if multiple people or entities should be named as defendants in a wrongful death suit.

A wrongful death suit may allow an deceased person’s family to obtain adequate compensation for medical bills incurred prior to passing. Compensation might also cover final expenses or lost future earnings on behalf of the deceased. Other punitive damages can be awarded either through a negotiated settlement or jury trial. An attorney may be helpful in pursuing compensation or other relief in either scenario.
