Teen motorcyclists, and how they can stay safe

On Behalf of | Jan 3, 2018 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Ninety percent of motorcyclists who are involved in a crash had no formal training in how to ride a motorcycle. It’s essential that teenage motorcyclists should know how to stay safe on the road before heading out. There are some safety tips that can apply to motorcyclists in North Carolina and the rest of the U.S.

The first thing is for teens to attend a training course before going out with their motorcycles. Completing such a course may, as an added incentive, lead to discounts on motorcycle insurance. Next, teens should purchase the right safety gear. Denim or leather jackets and pants should be sufficient for protecting the arms and legs. Clothing should be reflective, however. Gloves, over-the-ankle boots, and shatterproof goggles are also a must.

Though many state laws do not mandate them, helmets are an obvious necessity. Only DoT-approved helmets are recommended because they contain an energy-absorbing foam and are heavier and sturdier. Teens should purchase one that fits well, even at the expense of not looking cool. When purchasing a motorcycle, they should prioritize cost and safety. Teens should never speed, as it accounts for roughly half of all single-vehicle motorcycle fatalities. Until they gain more experience and learn to handle distractions better, they should not offer rides to friends.

Even when taking these precautions, motorcyclists are at a higher risk for incurring serious injuries. When motorcycle collisions are caused by the negligence of other drivers, the riders can often suffer catastrophic injuries. They might want to have the assistance of an attorney when seeking compensation for medical bills and other losses.
