Motorcycles and passengers

There are certain steps motorcycle riders in North Carolina can take to make sure they and their passengers remain safe while on the road. By being extra aware, getting the right amount of practice and using good coordination, riding a motorcycle can be safe and fun.

Motorcycle operators who want to carry passengers on their motorcycle may benefit greatly from taking a motorcycle safety course, such as the course that is provided by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Before getting on any busy highways and roads, motorcyclists should also first try driving around with a passenger in areas that have low traffic and that do not pose as much risk for accidents.

Motorcyclists should also make sure that they are operating within the confines of the law. In many states, it is necessary to have a complete motorcycle license before allowing a passenger on one’s vehicle as a motorcycle learners permit generally does not permit passengers.

It is important to adhere to the state’s DMV laws regarding passengers on motorcycles. If they have any questions, motorcyclists can review their state’s DMV website or consult with a nearby driver’s license office.

A motorcycle that is to be used to carry a passenger should have a seat that can accommodate two people and additional foot pegs. A helmet should also be available for the passenger to use. No passengers should be allowed on a motorcycle that is not properly equipped to carry a passenger.

Individuals who are injured as a result of negligent motorcyclists may have legal recourse. A negligent motorcycle operator may be held liable for not properly preparing their motorcycle for a passenger, driving while distracted or other irresponsible driving behaviors. Financial compensation may be pursued against motorcyclists for expenses associated with spinal injuries caused by a motorcycle accident.
