How motorcyclists stay safe when group riding

Though group riding is a favorite activity of many motorcyclists, riders should keep in mind that it comes with certain risks. The tips that experts give regarding motorcycle safety apply here in North Carolina as well as in the rest of the U.S.

While safety in numbers is a good general rule, smaller groups are safer when it comes to group riding. In a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, many motorcyclists said they felt most comfortable in groups of 10 or fewer.

Riders should also address all their concerns together before heading out. Certain decisions, such as how fast they should ride and how many breaks to take, should be made with the least experienced rider in mind so as to prevent accidents due to exhaustion. Another matter that should be addressed is who should bring the necessities, which may include bike tools and first-aid kits. Everyone should arrive with a full tank of gas and have a cell phone on them at all times.

Riding in formation can be tricky since the safest is a staggered formation. This is where the first rides on the left or right side, the second rides on the opposite side and so on. One second’s distance between motorcycles is ideal. Riders should pass cars in formation. On curvy roads and highway entrances, a single-file formation is best.

When riders don’t follow such advice and instead act recklessly by tailgating or competing with their fellow riders, they’re liable to cause a motorcycle accident. They will then be responsible for any injuries and damage they cause. Victims can discuss the situation with a lawyer, who may help file a claim for damages.
