On March 29, a two-vehicle accident involving a church bus in southwest Texas resulted in the deaths of 13 people. Authorities stated that two different police departments received reports of a pickup truck that was being driven erratically just prior to the crash.
Authorities with the Uvalde Police Department stated that a caller called 911 after fearing that the pickup truck would cause a crash. Although deputies were dispatched, the same caller reported that there had been an accident before the deputies were able to arrive. The accident occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. A separate caller also reported the pickup truck and assisted with providing the location of the accident.
It appeared that the pickup truck crossed the center line and collided with the church bus near the town of Concan. The bus driver, aged 67, and 12 passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A 13th passenger died after being transported to a nearby hospital. The church members were returning from a three-day retreat. The 20-year-old driver of the pickup truck was hospitalized with critical injuries.
