Preserving your rights to money damages after an accident

We hope our readers had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend. While this is what people generally strive for, accidents unfortunately happen. In some car crashes, it is obvious who was at fault. In others, it could be a coin flip.

In either scenario, you should do your best to preserve your legal right to recover for your injuries and damages. After all, you don’t want to lose your right to recovery because of correctable mistakes. With that, drivers should take note of the following tips.

Don’t lose your temper – It is natural to be upset after a car accident, especially if you believe the other driver was clearly wrong or not paying attention. But you could lose your right to recover money damages from an accident if you cause further issues by threatening or physically harming the other driver.

Check on everyone in the accident – In some accidents, a driver may be able to get out of their cars under their own power and check to see if everyone is ok. However, if either of the drivers or passengers are unconscious or trapped in a vehicle, calling for help is essential.

Don’t leave the scene – Also, you should remain at the accident scene until the authorities arrive. A police report may be helpful in getting a third party’s perspective in how the accident occurred.

Keep track of medical treatments – While you should go to the hospital after an accident, it is also important to keep track of all medical treatments and recommendations.

If you have additional questions about your rights and options after a car accident, an experienced personal injury attorney can advise you.
