It’s no secret that distracted driving is a dangerous habit that many drivers still take part in. The desire to stay connected and respond quickly to text messages and social media updates is arguably just as strong as it was three years ago. In fact, the National Safety Council estimates that cell phone use is responsible for one in four accidents on American roads.

Even though cell phones can be dangerous when used behind the wheel, they can be useful in giving more insight in how accidents occur. Essentially, a cell phone can be turned into a dashboard camera

A recent article produced on overdrive.com explored the different cell phone apps and the mounting packages that are available that can let cell phones be as effective as cameras mounted on police cruisers. Dash cams can be help in allowing a driver (and other related entities) remember how an accident occurred. After all, car accidents can be traumatic experiences, and drivers and passengers may not remember all of the vital details that may have occurred right before (or during) a crash.

Having digital footage could clear up discrepancies and even exonerate a driver accused of failing to use reasonable care while behind the wheel. At the same time, it could show what the driver saw in the moments leading up to the crash, as well as what he or she should have been paying attention to before an accident occurred.

Whether these apps become mainstream remains to be seen. In the meantime, those who are involved in car accidents should consult an experienced personal injury attorney for professional legal advice.
