A news reporter died on Dec. 23 in a tragic motor vehicle crash. The 22-year-old woman was driving one of three vehicles involved in a crash that happened at a Waxhaw, North Carolina, intersection. The crash happened at approximately 7 p.m.

The woman was traveling to Charlotte to visit a friend’s family when the accident occurred. Police are still trying to determine why the crash may have happened. They are also trying to find out if weather may have played a role in the collision.

The young woman was employed by a television station based out of Florence-Myrtle Beach, and it was her first job after graduating from the University of Miami. Her biography at the station reads that she served as co-anchor and writer at the station. The television station posted a notice on its website saying that there is always a human side to every accident or tragedy they report about on television. In this case, it seems that such a tragedy has hit the station on an especially personal level.

Initial accident reports issued by news media tend to be based on the information that police gather from the accident scene. It is important to keep in mind that police investigations — although very important for the purpose of accident evaluation — are not always completely accurate.

Sometimes, by performing an independent investigation into crash scene evidence, injured victims and family members of deceased victims may discover the existence of an automotive defect, a roadway repair issue, or a negligent driver that caused the crash. For example, accident reconstruction specialists may play an important role in such an investigation, which could ultimately support claims for financial restitution relating to the crash.
