A head-on collision between two vehicles occurred north of Sanford along the concurrent route of N.C. Highway 87/U.S. Highway 15-501 on Oct. 7. One man was hospitalized with minor injuries.
According to preliminary report released by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the head-on collision occurred when a northbound Chevy pickup truck, driven by a 62-year-old man, attempted to overpass another vehicle along U.S. Highway 15-501 near the Deep River Bridge in Chatham County. The pickup driver moved into the southbound lane to begin his passing attempt, and saw an oncoming Ford passenger vehicle driven by a 52-year-old man. In response, the driver of the Ford swerved left to avoid a crash while the driver of the Chevy swerved right. The result was a head-on collision as both drivers attempted to evade each other.
The driver of the Ford reportedly suffered minor injuries and was transported to Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford for medical treatment. The condition of the man driving the Chevy pickup was unclear as he reportedly did not allow paramedics at the scene to evaluate or treat him.
