On Sept. 6 around 9 p.m., a 51-year-old man driving an SUV reportedly hit a pickup truck. According to police, the SUV driver was headed eastbound near Beaufort when it crossed the centerline.
The pickup truck driver reportedly veered to avoid a head-on collision, but the SUV sideswiped the pickup, causing the pickup to overturn in a ditch. Paramedics took the family of six inside the pickup to the hospital after helping the grandmother out of the vehicle. One of the occupants of the SUV was also taken to the hospital, but the report did not state whether it was the driver or his 50-year-old female passenger.
According to authorities, the SUV driver is being charged with DWI, reckless driving, having an open container and driving while his license was revoked. He also was placed under electronic monitoring and taken into custody on Sept 7. The judge increased his bond from $1,500 to $2,000 before his Sept. 8 court hearing. The SUV passenger received charges for aiding and abetting an impaired driver.
