A bicyclist suffered injuries in North Carolina on June 30 after she was struck by a car. According to the report, the accident was caused by a 68-year-old motorist who failed to stop at a red light.
Police stated that the bicyclist, a 64-year-old woman, was cycling on Scull Creek Trail in Fayetteville. At approximately 4:58 p.m., she was crossing North Street to continue to ride on the trail when a Chevrolet HHR vehicle that was being driven by a 68-year-old woman struck the cyclist. The cyclist was taken to a nearby hospital after suffering numerous injuries, including abrasions, scrapes and a possible ankle injury.
The driver was cited by the authorities for careless driving and for failing to have proof of insurance. It was not known if they were planning to file any other charges or citations against the motorist.
When motorists fail to follow the rules of the road, others who have the right to use the roadways, including bicyclists, may suffer potentially serious injuries. While the woman in this case suffered injuries that appeared to be not as serious, others are not so lucky; they may suffer broken bones, damage to internal organs and even traumatic brain injuries.
Bicyclists who suffer any injuries that require treatment or time to heal may be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who hit them. In order to be eligible, however, there must be evidence that the accident was caused by the driver’s negligence. In such a case, the victim may receive compensation for medical bills and loss of income.
