Anyone who has received treatment at a hospital knows how quickly medical bills can add up. Even patients who are treated in the emergency room and receive minimal care could end up with a bill totaling several hundred dollars. For people who have suffered a serious injury in a car accident, the medical bills can quickly become astronomical. Two people in North Carolina could be facing this reality as they begin to recover from the injuries they suffered in a serious motor vehicle accident.
The accident occurred in early February near an intersection on a North Carolina road. Police reports indicate that the driver of a sports utility vehicle struck the rear fender of a second SUV. The impact of the collision sent the second vehicle tumbling through the intersection, where it was struck a second time by a pickup truck.
While the driver of the second SUV was able to exit the vehicle without aid from first responders, members of the fire department had to remove the roof of the vehicle in order to extricate his female passenger. Both were taken by helicopter to the hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.
While the investigation into the accident is likely ongoing, troopers expect that the driver of the first SUV will be charged with failure to yield the right of way. This man reportedly told a local newspaper that he thought he had looked both ways but guessed he failed to see the vehicle before entering the intersection. If the injured victims can prove before a North Carolina civil court that the accident and serious injury to each was, in fact, caused by this driver’s negligence, they could receive compensation for their medical bills and other financial damages.
