It has become a common practice for states to create laws banning the practice of texting while driving. Most people agree that even taking one’s attention from driving, even momentarily, can cause an accident resulting in serious injury or even death. Police believe that a recent accident in North Carolina that caused serious injury to a college student was the result of a distracted driver who was reading a text.

The accident occurred in the morning in mid-November. According to reports, a family with a flat tire pulled into the median to change the tire. The mother and two young children exited the car, but remained in the median. A 26-year-old driver was allegedly reading a text when he realized he was headed directly toward the woman and her children.

As he attempted to avoid hitting the woman and children, he is believed to have struck another vehicle. The driver of that car was transported to an area hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The mother in the median also required hospital treatment. The driver believed to have been reading a text has now been charged with failure to remain in his lane as well as texting while driving.

While it is fortunate that no lives were lost as a result of the accident, the woman who is suffering from a serious injury as a result of the accident likely has a long recovery ahead of her. In addition to hospital bills, she may have to miss work while she recovers. In order to seek help with these unexpected financial burdens, the woman can file a personal injury claim in a North Carolina civil court. A verdict in her favor could result in monetary damages to help with any relevant expenses.
