When a child is born, a parent has certain expectations for what that child’s life will be like. Few parents expect that their child’s life will end early in tragedy or that they will lose their life along with their child. Unfortunately, a woman and her young son were recently killed in one such tragic collision. Another young man now faces several charges as he waits in a North Carolina jail as a result of his suspected involvement in the accident.
The accident occurred in late October. Traffic cameras apparently show a truck driven by an 18-year-old male beside a vehicle that contained a 19-year-old woman and her 3-year-old son. According to police reports, witnesses state that both drivers were speeding just before the young man crossed the center line which caused the accident.
The woman and her son were killed. Police claim that the male called for help, but did not stop. He now faces manslaughter and hit-and-run charges. His family disputes the charges against him, claiming he never made contact with the woman’s car and demanding his release.
Any accident that results in the unexpected loss of life is a tragedy. Beyond the emotional devastation associated with such a loss, a victim’s surviving family members are often left with an overwhelming financial burden, including loss of income as well as funeral and medical expenses. To help with these expenses, the woman’s family could have the option of filing a wrongful death lawsuit in a North Carolina civil court. If the court agrees that the collision was caused by the young man’s negligence, the family could receive compensation for the expenses arising from these tragic deaths.
