This time of year is filled with excitement for the majority of high school students. Football season is well under way, and most schools are gearing up for homecoming festivities. Unfortunately one North Carolina high school is coping with the death of one of their students instead of celebrating their football team’s latest victory.
Three teenagers were reportedly on their way to a high school football game when a tragic car accident happened. There are few known details of the accident at this time. However, police speculate that speed contributed to it. A 16-year-old female passenger died as a result, and the two male occupants, one the driver of the vehicle, are currently recovering.
Reports indicate that none of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol has been already been ruled out as a contributing factor. More details, and potentially charges against the driver, will likely come to light as authorities complete their investigation into the incident.
The tragic death of this young girl has left an entire community in mourning and wondering how future tragedies such as this can be prevented. The family of the deceased teenager will likely have to deal with funeral expenses, while the family of the surviving passenger will have to cope with medical bills as he recovers. In circumstances such as these, many people choose to file a civil suit in a North Carolina court. If it can be proved that the driver’s negligence caused the accident and the injury and death that followed, a court could award monetary damages in order to help with the financial burden created by the accident.
