Those who sign up to protect the freedoms of our country face the reality of death in their daily lives. However, they expect to face death at the hands of an enemy, not as a result of a rash decision that places the lives of others in jeopardy. The families of two soldiers who were stationed in North Carolina are facing the prospect of a future without their family members.
In March, two vehicles began driving at a fast pace down a road in North Carolina at night. One vehicle contained a male and female. The second contained a male. All three were soldiers at Fort Bragg. The driver in the first vehicle lost control of his car before crossing over into oncoming traffic and hitting a sedan with a driver and one passenger.
The female passenger in the car that lost control died at the scene of the accident. The male driver died after being transported to the hospital. The driver and passenger in the sedan were both injured as well. Police now believe the soldiers were street racing.
The surviving solider has now been charged with two counts of death by motor vehicle. In addition to the loss of two soldiers, two innocent people were injured as a result of the accident. The injured parties may certainly have a civil case in North Carolina courts against the soldiers. A successful claim could provide the injured parties with assistance with medical bills and compensation for time missed from work while they are healing. In addition, the surviving family of the female passenger in the soldier’s vehicle may benefit by investigating their rights under the wrongful death laws in our state.
