Last week on our Fayetteville, North Carolina, personal injury law blog, we had mentioned that Thanksgiving week is notorious for fatal motor vehicle accidents. More folks travel during this time of year to go visit their families, and more travelers on the road combined with inclement weather or poor driving decisions can lead to serious or fatal car wrecks.
Even with motorists being warned to drive carefully and safely in North Carolina last week, some drivers continued to make poor decisions and endangered the lives of others. On Thanksgiving morning, a Cumberland County man was struck by an alleged drunk driver in Fayetteville.
The victim’s mother said that she had planned to spend the day with her 22-year-old son, but she never expected to spend Thanksgiving together in a hospital room while her son remained unconscious and seriously hurt.
According to reports, the accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. The victim was driving his Chevrolet Cavalier when it suddenly broke down on the road. The driver and his passenger got out of the car to push the disabled vehicle to the side of the road. While trying to move the vehicle from the middle of the road, the Cumberland County man was struck by another car.
The man’s injuries were considered to be life-threatening. His friend was hurt in the accident as well and was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. Reports have not indicated whether the victim’s condition has improved since Thanksgiving. Several hours after the accident, the victim’s mother had said that her son suffered a serious leg injury.
Police are investigating the car accident. The driver who struck the woman’s son and his friend has been charged with DWI since the crash.
Hopefully the driver who struck the man last week in Fayetteville was properly insured so that the victim and his family can recover the maximum amount of compensation they may be entitled to obtain.
