The publication, Southern Business & Development, named North Carolina as 2012 State of the Year. It was honored based on activity in the state in 2011. This is the third time our state has obtained this award, as it was also honored in 2005 and 2006.
The award is the result of the state’s hard work in promoting and growing business. According to Gov. Bev Perdue, the main reasons for the state’s successes are the quality of education available to its residents, the highly skilled workforce and the incredibly low cost of doing business in the state.
In 2011, North Carolina was granted 89 projects, each of which provided at least 200 jobs or a minimum investment of $30 million. That is more than any other state. Since 2009, North Carolina companies have agreed to create 100,000 jobs and make capital investment improvements of more than $23 billion within our communities.
The publication is not the only organization drawing attention to North Carolina for its business recruitment efforts – others include CNBC and Forbes. Numerous factors led to this acknowledgment including the state’s diverse economy. Additionally, the state has landed projects recently in nearly every major industry, including data centers, financial services, health care, automotive, furniture, pharmaceuticals, headquarters and food and beverage, just to name a few.
Business owners appreciate North Carolina because it is committed to growing business and providing opportunities for businesses to open their doors. The capital investments along with the willingness to work with companies to establish them in the state have made a big difference. These factors plus the affordability to operate a business in North Carolina and the access to trained, skilled workers makes the state the ideal choice for many business owners.
