Radio Spot: When to Stop for School Buses

Drive smart – be safe. Know when to stop for school buses.

Under North Carolina law, when the mechanical stop sign swings out and the flashing light come on, all the cars and other vehicles, in both directions, need to stop. Drivers need to wait for three things: the bus’s stop sign is withdrawn, the flashing lights are off, and the bus is moving forward. On a four- lane highway with a median or turn lane, only the traffic that is following the bus has to stop.

North Carolina has gotten tougher on people who illegally pass a school bus with a minimum fine of $500… and a whopping increase in their insurance bill. So watch out for those school buses and obey the signals. It will save your wallet and, even more important, can save a life.
